Her art is her own, and she offers rare pleasures. She understands the song, not only as notes and syllables on paper, but also the heart-messages it sends us. She conveys tenderness, thoughtfulness, wit, and ardor: emotions and perceptions aimed right at us through her very human voice”

After winning the 2020 JazzTimes’ Readers’ Poll for Best Female Vocalist, Angela has kept a busy tour schedule with performances in Japan, Turkey, Germany, England, as well as across Canada. Taking inspiration from vintage musicals, the swing era, blues, and bebop, the Victoria-based vocalist pens original lyrics and compositions in the style of classic standards. She performs these alongside repertoire from the Great American Songbook, such as tunes popularized by Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, and Julie London. Angela recorded her 2019 album in New York City, co-produced by bassist Cameron Brown. Toronto Music Report writes that Angela is “a gem of a vocalist who makes all her chosen material sound magical.” JazzWeekly describes the former actress as “fun and quirky, hip and a hoot, wispy and romantic; she slithers and oozes, and cleverly swings.” She won competitive grants from the British Columbian and Canadian governments to support the release of her second album, Love for Connoisseurs. Original songs from this project have been featured on leading Spotify editorial playlists. Angela brings her Vocals ’n Vibes concept to Frankie’s for the first time. The quartet’s arrangements feature the warm, mellow sounds of a vibraphone (played with mallets similar to a xylophone but with metal bars). Vancouver vibraphonist Nick Apivor has been part of Vancouver’s jazz scene for over 20 years, playing with The N.O.W Orchestra, Juno-nominated Rumba Calzada, Out of The Woods, Double Vibes, Mimosa, Bill Runge Quintet, and numerous other groups. Nick has performed at many jazz festivals, including the Borneo Jazz Festival in Malaysia, and has toured across the U.S. and Canada. They are joined by bassist Brent Gubbels who has toured North America and Europe extensively with leading artists playing international jazz and folk festivals. Drummer/vibraphonist Craig Scott has a long career performing with such artists as Sweets Edison, Rosemary Clooney, Phil Woods, Ernestine Anderson, Dianna Krall and the Nylons. “If this is what the new generation of jazz diva has to offer, count me in. An all-original set and her whole presentation is a show stopper. Playing like a dream come true, this lass with class is just going to bowl you over.” — Midwest Record
